Anything that troubles us or disturbs us in any way, we need to cope with. Coping is tough and confusing, and at times it may even seem impossible. And so, in this blog series, we’re going to talk about coping to make it easier for you to understand your coping styles and figure out how to move forward with them. Any methods that you use to cope with something are called coping mechanisms. And we’re going to talk about them all.
One such way of coping is problem-focused coping, where you usually deal with the problem by trying to solve it. Let’s take an example. Let’s say you have moved out of your city for college or for a new job. It’s a new place, and you don’t really know anyone, and you know you’re going to be busy with assignments and work stuff, managing the house, and everything else that comes with shifting to a new place. Obviously, you’re excited to move out and start a new life, but you’re also nervous, and you’re scared and you’re stressed, and you’re worrying about things that might not even happen. Well, what you can do to ease out some stress is to map out how your day would look. What time would you get up? How much time would you spend to get ready and do a morning workout? How much time would it take to go to your workspace or college? So on and so forth. This is called time management, where you give everything the time that it needs and divide your day into whatever you want to do, be it morning meditation, an evening swim, or an hour of doing absolutely nothing, whatever fits into your daily activities. Time management is a way of practicing problem-focused coping mechanisms.
You can call up one of your new colleagues or a college senior to learn a little bit more about the subject, you can talk to your neighbors and figure out how things work around at this place so that you transition into this new place smoothly. Seeking information about whatever troubles you or for whatever you are in doubt of always helps clear out a lot of things in your mind. These are just a few examples of coping mechanisms that are problem-focused.
