In And Out Of Control

When we are preparing for something, when we want something to work out properly because we tend to plan and prepare for it. We plan for entrance exams, we plan for parenting, and we plan for the future. Sometimes we also plan about the littlest things, like what to wear tomorrow for work, or what to cook for dinner. This gives us the opportunity to prepare for it beforehand. And we believe if everything is perfectly planned out, the thing will go immaculately. But sometimes, that isn’t the case. Sometimes even if you plan so deeply for things, life has way to turn the whole plan upside down, one tiny mistake here and there that probably you didn’t even make, has a big impact on this plan that you’ve been devising for so long, and all seems to go haywire. Out of hand.

This is when spontaneity kicks in, we make quick decisions based on the situation. Spontaneous actions are those which are done without planning, they are instinctively done with what we sometimes call a gut feeling.

But sometimes, when we look back at some of the actions we did or the decisions we took, we realize that we mistake spontaneity for impulse. Where both are quick actions based on the moment we are currently in, the impulsive actions are made without thinking about the consequences further, and rather by sticking with one emotion and letting it take over us. For example, when we are very angry, we would want to throw something or slap someone or break something, these actions are only in respect to the emotion but mess the whole situation. So, it is essential to have this clarity before taking any action, than where is thought of the action coming from.

If we can differentiate between this, and act on what we feel naturally, also with the thought of  the consequence, that would be a perfect balance of planning and spontaneity.

When we consider both of these aspects of making decisions, we might have a better chance of things working out. We can totally use it to our benefit. So much of creative ideas and solutions to the problems come from being spontaneous and acting on our instinct. But at the same time, having some things planned, makes us aware about what to do in order to get closer to and further achieve our goals.

If we practice self-control properly, if we sit and think through our thoughts, these decisions become easier. By doing so again and again, we are able to judge a situation better. Plan things and still be ready for things to go out of control, and even in sudden unexpected situations we are available to navigate better.

This mindfulness is also in a way self-care, to care about the decision that you make, to care about your creativity and ideas, to care for your goals, to care for achieving them, to care for your mind in a way that you are able to do it all, even in and out of control.
