Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘your mind causes problems for you’, well your mind can also solve certain problems for you. When you use your mind, or your mental powers to solve any problem or to cope with anything it is called cognitive coping. This process involves breaking down the issue mentally.
Suppose your exam season just got over, and the tension is finally melting down. You have your mind set on the vacations and you feel a little lighter in your chest.
Suddenly, your phone starts buzzing, and you see a friend calling you, you pick up the call and he tells you that the results are out. You rush to your laptop to log in and to find out your results, as the screen in front of you blankly buffers you can hear your heartbeat in the fingertips on your keyboard. The page loads and you find out you’ve failed in two subjects out of five. You feel your heart sink in and your mind go numb for a few minutes until your phone buzzes again, you put your phone on silent and just sit there.
These series of events can lead up to a lot of things. Low self esteem, fear of failure, loss of interest and a lot more. Here’s a few ways that we can cope with it.
When you’re stressed out and overwhelmed by thoughts, breathing exercises or grounding techniques, where you sit down, breathe and try to come back to a calm state of mind would be helpful.
Talking to yourself with a positive outlook, telling yourself that failing a few exams does not define your entire character, there’s more to you than just these exams, and now you know what to work towards going forward. Positive self-talk or positive outlooks can help you put on a better lens to look at the situation at hand.
Looking at the whole problem in a different way might also help you feel better about it. Rather than taking it up personally, understanding that these are just skills and can be developed and worked upon, and figuring out a way to actually work upon these things might give you a confidence boost as well.
These are just a few ways that can provide some comfort or just help you see the situation better. All of these techniques or practices are something done in our own heads with the power of our own minds.
