To be, to belong.

Having a conversation with your group of friends, the laughter and the taunts and the old 70s rock  music, or sitting in the living room having dinner with your family watching the same old movie that you’ve watched a hundred times before and all of you knowing the dialogues by heart and saying it with the actors while your brother is stealing food from your plate when you’re too emerged in the movie, or  laying in your bed on a late Saturday morning and just looking at the corners of the walls of your  rented room, and the photos on them, the way light falls on all of it, and its shadows. This is the feeling of belonging. Belonging with people, belonging to a place.

We feel, we belong when we feel content with whatever, wherever, and whoever, we are.  Contentment might not have much to do with how positive or negative a situation is, but it has more to do with how you accept and acknowledge a situation.Scientifically, most of our needs go back to survival needs, but today, we are being provided with most of our basic survival needs like food, clothes and shelter. With the help of inventions of machines and technology, things have become less physical, more emotional and intellectual, over time survival itself has become more emotional and intellectual as well. So today the need to belong also refers to survival. We need to feel belonged, to know ourselves, to know this world and place of ourselves in this world, but more importantly we need to belong to something and to somewhere to call it home, to be connected to it, to have an identity with, to feel warm about, to feel for it and to cry and laugh about it.

For example, it gives you a reason to stay away from home and study the course that you think you belong to, at the same time it makes you go back home, go back to where you  belong just to meet some family and friends.

Belonging in itself is an incredible phenomenon. Belonging with someone and to somewhere give us a reason to be, gives a reason to do things. It gives you a reason to care for people, it makes you selfless and makes you think about more than just yourself. To belong almost means to be in the right place.

And as we go on to find our right place in this world we come to know, the more we start to acknowledge, the more we start to belong. The more you look at your city, its people and its traits, the more you start to feel belonged there. The more you acknowledge what you like to do, the more you  start to feel for it, the more you understand it, the more you feel warm towards it. When we feel love, warmth and connection towards something, we feel we belonged. And this process of making this connection, this process of falling in love with something is what belonging to it is. Feeling all of these things gives a contentment about life, it makes you feel human, it makes you feel that you, in this world, belong.
